This time limit will be lifted globally, according to tweets from the company’s official page. The removal of this limit will take effect from midnight on Thanksgiving Day to 6AM ET on the 27th of November.
The forty-minute time limit has been a restriction on the platform throughout the pandemic, with many users forced to restart calls once the stipulated time elapses. Many of Zoom’s competitors imposed similar restrictions, with Google Meet offering a 60-minute time frame. All video conferencing platforms offer higher grade plans (which they charge extra for) that remove this time limit and increase the number of participants permitted. Zoom gained popularity in the earlier days of the pandemic, with the app becoming more vital in communicating with school mates, co-workers, friends and family members. Due to its increased popularity, it has come under increased scrutiny, especially regarding the level of security it provides to its users. This gesture from Zoom is one that reminds users that the company has their interest at heart, especially as a number of families are still apart and this will let people enjoy more virtual time with their loved ones on Thanksgiving.
